Warm Remembrances of Carolyn Fahey’s Tenure as AIRROC’s Executive Director
When the news of Carolyn Fahey’s announcement spread that she will be stepping down as Executive Director, there was an outpouring of sadness and a great sense of loss among the AIRROC community. Carolyn’s leadership has made AIRROC a stronger professional organization, and her involvement has solidified and expanded AIRROC’s mission and standing in the insurance industry ecosystem.
In recognition of Carolyn’s distinguished years of service, we collected the following remarks and reflections from past and present board members and colleagues on her incredible contributions and lasting impressions.
Leah Spivey, Munich Re North America, Board Chair 2015-2018
Carolyn is not only the face of AIRROC but also the heart and soul of the Association as we know it now in 2025. For the last decade Carolyn has poured herself, hard work, and creativity into AIRROC to make it the thriving and diverse organization that it is.
Carolyn’s energy and poise allowed the Board of Directors to modernize by digitalizing AIRROC Matters and upgrading the Association Website. Carolyn also increased the number of Events, introduced Webinars and was instrumental in creating the CLP designation and the NextGen of AIRROC.
Carolyn not only grew the Association but also grew herself in the process. She was already familiar with the insurance and reinsurance industry and its legacy space but was able to further develop relationships with vendors, law firms, regulators, and commissioners throughout the country. Her venue contacts and familiarity in New York, Chicago, London, and Monte Carlo has also been expanded in her tenure with AIRROC.
What I admire most about Carolyn is her can do attitude and ability to keep all stakeholders apprised and make them feel heard. When at times it must have been like herding cats, Carolyn kept her cool and carried on as a true queen of the castle she worked so hard to rebuild.
I cannot say enough about how Carolyn carried the BOD and me during my tenure as Board Chair. Her professionalism while setting new strategy, managing through an IRS audit and resulting remedies that most profoundly impacted Carolyn personally, and rescheduling a snowed-out Membership Meeting is unparalleled by anything I have ever seen.
Personally, Carolyn has been a true friend to me and others, when we were dealing with challenging times during our careers and in our personal lives. I was blessed to work closely with Carolyn for over a decade and honored to continue our connection beyond AIRROC.
Thank you for this opportunity to commend one of our Industry’s top talents, AIRROC’s one key person, and our forever friend, Carolyn Fahey!
Peter Scarpato, Founding Editor AIRROC Matters, Board Member 2015- 2020
It’s not often in life that you get to collaborate with someone who can impress you with their talent and warm you with their smile. But that is who Carolyn Fahey is. For two decades, I’ve had the privilege of working side by side with her and witnessing first hand her unique ability to lead by example: Always prepared, always positive, and always kind. Righting and running the AIRROC ship and working with an experienced, opinionated board are not for the faint of heart. But Carolyn was always up to the challenge. And the organization’s perennial success speaks for itself.
But what will stay with me, and all who know Carolyn, is her genuine humanity, consistent integrity, and disarming style. We’ve shared many good times, hearty laughs, and made warm memories that I will cherish forever. All the best to you my friend. Please stay in touch.
Connie O’Mara, O’Mara Consulting LLC, Advisory Council 2017-2025
How did she do it? Over the years I have been associated with AIRROC, I have seen it grow from an alternative to the RAA for companies in Run-off to an independent organization with a cutting-edge agenda for networking, learning, and dispute management. AIRROC plays a key role in the array of business interests of its members. Carolyn has directed, organized, envisioned and somehow herded this brethren of cats into a dynamic working group that has excelled at creating content that its members need so they can find common language and knowledge that serves as a basis for improving the industry. She has done it without grandstanding, without impatience in the face of problems, and with enough subtle diplomacy to somehow solve a range of problems, from carrying on in the face of a pandemic, to growing the organization at home and abroad. As I sit here and think about how to reduce this to a set of rules for running a non-profit professional organization (and I haven’t asked AI’s help) I realize it has been a result of her sincere desire to work for everyone in the organization be their best selves.
Bill Teich, The Hartford, Board Chair 2019-2021
Reflecting on my years working with Carolyn Fahey, especially during my tenure as chair, I am filled with deep appreciation for her remarkable leadership and dedication to AIRROC. Navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Carolyn’s guidance ensured that AIRROC not only survived but thrived, growing in both size and relevance.
Carolyn’s strategic vision and commitment to the legacy industry have been instrumental in shaping AIRROC’s success. Her ability to foster community and collaboration among members has created a supportive environment that continues to flourish.
On a personal level, Carolyn’s mentorship and support have been invaluable. Her kindness and thoughtfulness have made a lasting impact on my professional journey and the lives of many within our organization. I fondly recall her calm and reassuring presence during pivotal moments, which helped us navigate through uncertainty.
As Carolyn steps down, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for her contributions. Her legacy will continue to inspire and guide AIRROC for years to come. Carolyn, thank you for everything you have done for AIRROC and for all of us who have had the privilege of working with you.
Sally Redd, Allstate, Board Member 2022-2025
Carolyn’s impact on the AIRROC organization has been nothing short of remarkable. She has been a steady, reliable force, providing unwavering support to the board and every committee. Her ability to grow our membership and attract sponsors didn’t just happen. It was a result of dedication, strategic outreach, and a natural talent for building meaningful relationships. She made it look effortless, but we all know how much thought and care she put into every connection. Thanks to Carolyn, AIRROC didn’t just stay relevant, but also thrived. On a personal note, I would like to thank Carolyn for the support she’s provided me throughout the years. Her guidance and encouragement have had a meaningful impact on me, and I am incredibly grateful.
Marianne Petillo, ROM Re, Founding Board Member, Co-Chair 2013-2015, Treasurer 2017-2025
I first met Carolyn Fahey during her time at the RAA. A pivotal discussion took place in ROM’s office between Frank Nutter, Debra Hall, and Carolyn regarding the possibility of adding a runoff division to the RAA. After extensive deliberation, the RAA’s board ultimately decided against the idea, leading the runoff sector to forge its own path—and thus, AIRROC was born.
In AIRROC’s early years, Carolyn was not involved. However, after our first Executive Director retired, we attempted to entrust the organization’s management to an external entity. That experiment proved to be a resounding failure. AIRROC was already at a crossroads in its history—either we needed to set things right, or risk the organization’s demise.
That’s when Carolyn stepped in.
At the time, Kathy Barker and I served as Co-Chairs, and we both knew Carolyn well from her work at the RAA. Without hesitation, we agreed that she was the leader AIRROC needed to grow, evolve, and remain relevant. Looking back now—twenty years into AIRROC’s history—Carolyn has done exactly that, and more.
Under her leadership, AIRROC has reached remarkable new heights. She has brought in members that the initial board never imagined, expanding both the organization’s culture and offerings. Through every transition and challenge, Carolyn remained steadfast. Her dedication, tireless work ethic, and unwavering commitment ensured AIRROC’s continued success.
We can never thank her enough for her contributions—not only to AIRROC, but to the entire runoff industry. Her ever-present smile and easygoing nature will be deeply missed. Carolyn’s leadership, her ability to connect with AIRROC’s members, and her unparalleled professionalism has left a lasting legacy.
It is only fitting that she returns to the RAA, where her journey began. Carolyn, I wish you nothing but the best in your next chapter, and know that you will always have a friend in AIRROC. Please keep in touch.
Brendan McQuiggan, Brandywine, Board Member 2021-2025
Carolyn has been our fearless Executive Director for my entire tenure as a member of AIRROC, and I wish her nothing but success with her exciting new opportunity. I recall that when I was first asked if I was interested in running for the board, I was hesitant because I was relatively new to the business-side of the industry and had never served in this capacity before. A long-time board member told me that I should put those concerns aside in large part because Carolyn’s strong leadership and stewardship of the organization meant I would be supported as I learned the ins and outs of board membership. Truer words were never spoken. Having now worked closely with Carolyn for a number of years, I understand why the board was always so confident in her abilities and appreciative of her effort. She will be missed.
Cyndy Noonan, Project, Event & Member Manager, AIRROC Contractor
Working with Carolyn over the past 10 years has been an absolute pleasure. She has not only been an incredible colleague but also a true friend, and it’s been a joy to collaborate with her every step of the way.
Carolyn has taught me so much about leadership, creativity, loyalty, and dedication. Throughout the years, she brought fresh, meaningful, and fun ideas to the table—ensuring that members and attendees had both a valuable and enjoyable experience. From gala dinners in unique venues, new technologies to navigate, and shuttle rides to off-site venues, Carolyn always added her special touch. Her hard work speaks volumes in both the quality of her work and the strong relationships she’s built over her 13 years at AIRROC. During the challenging COVID years, her innovation and resilience truly stood out and helped us all navigate through uncertainty.
As Carolyn often says, we’ve worked so closely that we can finish each other’s sentences. And I believe that is true, so I hope she knows that my final sentence will always be: I wish you nothing but happiness and success in life, especially your next chapter, but I will miss you dearly.
Nicole Myers, Myers Creative Services, AIRROC Contractor
I’ve had the joy and privilege of working closely with Carolyn Fahey since 2012, handling the design, illustrations and production of AIRROC Matters and the AIRROC Annual. My team and I have deeply appreciated her clear vision, her gift for fostering collaboration, her consistently insightful feedback, and her amazing dedication and enthusiasm for the development of AIRROC. We’ve also valued her unwavering trust in our creative expertise—trust that inspired us to always go the extra mile.
All of this, combined with her genuine human warmth and generous laughter, creates a rare combination that has made every project not just successful, but truly enjoyable.
We wish her all the very best in her next chapter. It has truly been an honor.
Gina Pirozzi, G. Pirozzi Consulting, AIRROC Contractor
I will miss seeing Carolyn at the helm of AIRROC. We’ve collaborated through her entire tenure and I’m better off for it. I learned that she’s a genuine leader, facilitator, and manager who shepherded our organization through more than our share of challenges. We were all lucky to have her. Personally, I benefitted when she recognized I brought more to the AIRROC Publications Committee than just copywriting skills and referred me to an outside consulting gig that was perfect for me. I always appreciated that she went out of her way to do it. Even better, her instincts were right – the gig was memorable and right in my wheelhouse.
I have no doubt Carolyn will be great in her new role. I wish her the best of luck as she charts a new course ahead and thank her for showing me what class looks like at the top.
Keith Kaplan, Board Member 2005-2014
Hi Carolyn,
I remember when we interviewed you. You impressed us with your skill, your confidence and your warm personality. We selected you for the role of Executive Director and you have been knocking the ball out of the park ever since! I want to express my deepest gratitude and admiration for the incredible leadership you’ve provided the organization with over the past 13 years. Your tenure has not only been marked by growth and success, but by the kind of warmth and integrity that inspires everyone around you.
From the beginning, your focused vision and unwavering dedication have been the driving force behind AIRROC’s progress. Under your leadership, AIRROC has expanded its reach, strengthened its mission, and become the leading legacy insurance association. You’ve guided the organization through challenges with calm confidence and a wonderful demeanor, always keeping your eye on what truly matters — fulfilling AIRROC’s mission. As a result, AIRROC is in a far better place today than when you took over.
But what truly sets you apart is not just your strategic mind or your ability to lead, but your heart, your smile, and your friendly demeanor. You have a rare gift for making people feel welcome and valued. You are not just a leader — you are the kind of person we are proud to know, to follow, and to celebrate. Your legacy (no pun intended) is one of growth, kindness, and excellence, and you will be remembered long into the future.
Thank you for everything you have given to AIRROC. We are so lucky to have had you as our Executive Director for these past 13 years. We are going to miss you!
With deep appreciation and admiration and best wishes for success at the RAA.
Dawn Ballin, Enstar (US), Board Member 2021-2025, Chair 2025
I have worked with Carolyn for about 5 years now through AIRROC. From the beginning, Carolyn was a warm presence and a guide for me through my integration into the association. Her love of legacy and AIRROC shines through in everything she does. She has positioned AIRROC for future success and I wish her the best in her new role!
Megan E. McHugh, Brandywine, Board Secretary 2020-2025
Carolyn Fahey, and her radiant smile, will be profoundly missed at AIRROC. From our very first meeting nine years ago, it became evident that her exceptional talent and unwavering dedication significantly shaped the success of this organization. Over the years, I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand how her remarkable ability to connect with individuals on a personal level distinguished her from others.
She never shied away from hard work or difficult conversations; she led this organization with grace, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to our mission. Her passion for promoting our organization has left an indelible mark on all of us, and I am deeply grateful for the positive impact she has made. As we look ahead to the next 20 years of AIRROC, we are fortunate to have her leave us a blueprint for success to guide future initiatives.
Thank you, Carolyn, for being not only a colleague but a friend. I am so excited to cheer you on as you start your new position at the RAA and can’t wait to see what amazing work you will accomplish.
And since I can’t help exploring all that AI can do, a short poem:
In AIRROC’s halls, a bright smile shone,
Carolyn Fahey, our guiding stone.
For many long years, she led the way,
With grace and charm, come what may.
Hard work? No problem, she’d dive right in,
With tough talks and laughter, she’d always win.
A friend and a leader, she wore many hats,
Leaving us blueprints, like a wise diplomat.
Now off to the RAA, where she’ll surely soar,
We’ll cheer her on, can’t’ wait for more!
So here’s to Carolyn, our star so bright,
May your new adventures be pure delight!
Maryann Taylor, Publications Committee 2007-2025, Digital Content Manager 2019-2025
It has been a true delight to work with Carolyn for 13 years, first as a volunteer member of the Publication Committee and then as the Content Manager for the newsletter and Annual. As we all know, a leader like Carolyn is hard to find. She has been the driving force behind AIRROC’s success. Her incredible insight and vision has lifted AIRROC and helped it grow, not only in size but also its significance and influence in the legacy sector. Her skill for making each member and colleague feel important and appreciated is unparalleled. She brings her A-game to everything with which she is involved and rolls up her sleeves to attend to every detail. Her energy, warmth, charm and collaborative approach bring out the best in everyone she is around. Carolyn, it’s been such a pleasure working with you. I will miss your positivity and wisdom. Wishing you nothing but success in all your future endeavors.
Caryn Siebert, Gallager Bassett, Advisory Council 2023-2025
The date is April 2020 and I’m trying to get my car repaired as the world closes down for COVID. My phone rings and the voice on the other side asks me whether I’d be willing to be a speaker on social inflation at an AIRROC conference. Of course, following a chat, I say yes to doing so in Chicago but next thing that happens – we end up creating a virtual conference experience and pairing me up with two attorneys to use this new Zoom platform that nobody’s ever heard of before. It went perfectly! And the rest of my relationship with Carolyn is history. We got to know each other over the next two years without ever meeting in person. She invited me to join the Advisory Committee and offer ideas to the AIRROC Board, write articles, speak at events, and then finally we got to meet in person in the summer of 2023. Together we continued to drive the growth of AIRROC and the NextGen group, welcome more women to AIRROC, and engage in a fun strategic planning meeting where Carolyn awarded me a stuffed giraffe….for being willing to stick my neck out! Hopefully we’ll continuing mailing holidays gifts to one another coast to coast demonstrating how we have one another in mind!
Talitha Mitchell, AIRROC Executive Assistant 2025
Carolyn, it was brief but fabulous! I wish you all the best in your new venture and know that you will bring so much light wherever you go. Thank you for being a great example of genuine leadership and care. All the best!
Marcus Doran, AIG, Board Member 2015-2016; 2025
As a member of the AIRROC Education Committee over the years, I have had the pleasure of working with Carolyn on numerous Education Days year in and year out. There are times when we have our panels locked down in advance and others where we sneak in just under the wire. Regardless, Carolyn always comes through. From helping to generate topics for panels, reaching out to speakers, or finding a sponsor to plug a hole in the agenda on short notice, she makes it happen. And the results speak for themselves. We continue to have strong attendance numbers at our Education Days, members value the education and training component of AIRROC, and the number of CLP designations earned continues to grow. None of this would happen without Carolyn’s sustained efforts over the years. I, on behalf of the Education Committee and as an attendee of many Education Days/Events, greatly appreciate all of Carolyn’s contributions that have led to AIRROC achieving its educational goals. May Carolyn have great success in all her future endeavors.
Elaine Caprio, Board Member 2025
Although I recently joined the AIRROC board this year, it was apparent from the very beginning how seamlessly Carolyn ran the AIRROC organization. Whether she was imparting valuable historical knowledge, utilizing her superb networking skills to attract new member companies, or expertly organizing AIRROC committees and board meetings, she operated as a vital force in this organization. Carolyn’s presence, vitality, knowledge and strong work ethic will be deeply missed. I wish Carolyn all the very best in her new role in the industry and look forward to watching her star continue to rise.
Mychal L. Loney, Munich Re, Board Member 2024-2025
Carolyn, thank you for all you have done for AIRROC and the members and partners of the organization. Your dedication and hard work has gotten AIRROC to be the successful organization it is today. You have left big shoes to fill but have left it strong so it can keep going for another 20+ years.
Mostly I would like to say thank you for your honesty, dedication and friendship over the years. Your warm smile that greeted me 10 years ago still shines through and will be greatly missed. Wishing all the best as you embark on your next endeavor and I hope that our paths cross again.
Jane Newton, Xitus, Board Member 2025
I was first impressed by Carolyn and her seemingly effortless organizational skills at the AIRROC NJ Conference in October 2024. The event was superbly organized and seamlessly run—Carolyn managed it all without ever appearing flustered.
Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of working more closely with her on the board and as part of a panel in Bermuda. I’ve come to admire not only her deep knowledge and competence but also her ability to be both engaging and encouraging to those around her.
I’m truly sad not to have more time to work alongside her and continue learning from her. I have no doubt she will thrive in her new role, and I wish her all the very best for the future.
